Artist's Statement

I was trained as a figurative painter, but find myself painting landscape exclusively.  Brought up in a rural dairy community I find the patchwork of fields and woodlands that is typical of east coast farms has a geometry that speaks of my relationship to the land. For the first ten years or so that I painted landscape, there was nothing but the fields and walls to indicate that people even existed.  Then buildings began to creep into the view. What had always been a rather bland and empty sky took on a life of its own. This work I do is an adventure, always changing in ways that surprise and excite me. I am bewildered by the sense of otherness that penetrates today's perspective on the natural world.  We are not separate, but are an integral part of the ever changing reality.
